bull kelp weaving

INSPIRATIONAL SOUL- VICKI WEST

Vicki is a weaver & artist who uses her ancestors’ skill in a contemporary way to create her bull kelp vessels.  Bull kelp was traditionally used by the Tasmanian Aboriginal communities to create functional water carriers & water holders.

I undertook a workshop with Vicki at the Art Gallery NSW in May 2012 to create bull kelp seaweed vessels sewn together with artificial sinew.

She was an inspiration! I will be attempting to make some more of these sweet vessels when I am down south where Bull Kelp exists (southern NSW, VIC, TAS, SA)
